Today, despite great odds, Malala Yousafzai turned sixteen. The young activist and campaigner continues to inspire those many, many years her senior and turn the world’s attention to the treatment of women in her home country of Pakistan and the wider world.

Shot in the head by the Taliban for daring to demand an education, Malala miraculously survived and now lives in Birmingham, where her life-saving surgery took place. Today, on her 16th birthday, she will address the United Nations and will ask global leaders in New York to call for better access to education for children and young people across the world.

Malala is a true inspiration, with wisdom and integrity way beyond her years – and I suspect in 50 years time we will still be talking about her.
